The Sexual Side Effects-- Atlanta, GA
Since their inception just over a year ago, The Sexual Side Effects have been on fire. They’ve not only headlined one of Atlanta’s biggest street festivals, the East Atlanta Strut, but they’ve also sold out numerous club shows, staged their own Gilded Trash variety shows at the Masquerade and recently had their first music vide for “All She’ll Ever Hurt” screened at the Atlanta Film Festival. Front woman Amber Taylor was voted Best Musician in The Georgia Voice’s 2012 Best of Atlanta awards and the band was nominated for Best Alternative Band at the 2012 Georgia Music Awards, where “All She’ll Ever Hurt” won the Xfinity/Comcast Video of the Year Award. The band also just won “Best Local Rock Act” and “Best Band Name” by Creative Loafing in the 2012 Best of Atlanta. Having already set Atlanta ablaze, that fire recently spread via an Eastern U.S. tour, Southeastern tour support for Blackheart Records’ Girl in a Coma and performances at Sarasota’s Harvey Milk Festival and Pride festivals in Houston, Savannah, Roanoke and Atlanta.
The band recently had multiple tour dates with Hunter Valentine from Showtime’s The Real L Word.
Combining elements of Britpop and post-punk, the band’s jangly guitars often drift into psychedelic space realms to create an indie rock sound that exists somewhere between the androgyny of ’70s glam rock and ‘90s alternative rock. Drawing comparisons to Joan Jett and Chrissie Hynde, Taylor knows how to work a crowd, with an aura that reverberates on and off stage. Her electric charisma and haunting voice command attention while her epileptic guitar work leaves audiences gasping for breath. Guitarist Ryan McDougall adds complex textures and edgy solos while bassist Mike Sidner and drummer Clay McClure lay down solid, yet understated, grooves.
The band burst into 2012 with its debut EP HIGH MAINTENANCE, available as a free download on Band Camp. With more tour dates and other big plans to finish out 2012, The Sexual Side Effects infection definitely continues to spread.
