In the book of Acts chapter 1, just before the resurrection of Christ into heaven, Jesus tells His disciples about the promise of the Holy Spirit which would soon be given to them in the form of a powerful baptism. A few days later, on the day of Pentecost, the disciples were altogether when all of a sudden there was a sound of a mighty wind that came down from heaven, with tongues of fire resting upon each of the 120 in the upper room. This was the fulfillment of the promised Holy Spirit that Jesus said His Father would give to His followers. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is for the purpose of being empowered that we might be His witnesses in a dark and lost world.
Throughout church history there have been incredible seasons of mighty renewal and movements of demonstrations of God's power throughout the nations of the earth. Today the Holy Spirit is once again emphasizing our need of a fresh baptism of power as the early church encountered.
