In the Artist’s Studio was developed four years ago as an educational program for art enthusiasts and a fundraiser for the Downtown Arts District. This high end event offers a unique experience to learn more about the guest artist’s background and how they developed their art careers. The event includes a moderated discussion, art exhibition, silent auction, entertainment, complimentary food and beverages. Previous guest artists include: Hollywood photographer, Douglas Kirkland; renowned artist, Gilbert Young; and “Riply’s Believe It or Not!” featured artist, Doug Powell. This year we are pleased to have artist/writer/educator/champion of the arts, Sir Terrence Hummel as our guest artist. Sir Terrence Hummel, artist/writer/educator/champion of the arts, began showing his work professionally in 1996. His work can be found in private collections and galleries in New York, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Palm Springs, San Francisco, Orlando, Miami, Madrid, and Israel. Hummel founded the artists’ cooperative, the Orlando Visual Artists League (OVAL), which later became the CityArts Factory. Although he is primarily known for his mixed-media paintings which incorporate collaged fabric/paper, sgraffito, spray paint, acrylics, oils, oil pastels, plaster, and artifacts; Hummel has also created series of assemblage art in the form of sanctuary boxes. These works are based in the traditional Mexican “nichos” or “reliquios”. The consistent commonality in all of his work is that his unique pieces juxtapose symbols/text from several cultures, with contemporary socio-political images/artifacts creating a focal point for intellectual/emotional/spiritual self-reflection.
