As a Cuban American politician, Marco Rubio shows what hard work and determination can help ensure the American Dream. Rubio’s parents came to America from Cuba in 1956. His father was a bartender and his mother was a maid, a cashier and clerk. He has lived in West Miami for most of his life. He earned his bachelor’s degree in 1993 from the University of Florida, his juris doctor from the University of Miami Law school in 1996. He ran for the Florida House of Representatives in 2000, and speaker in 2006. Rubio then ran for U.S. Senate in 2009-2010, with a come-from-behind win. He threw his hat into the ring in the 2016 election, but he suspended his campaign in March 2016, and ran for re-election for his senate seat that same year.
