June 22: Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky is convicted of 45 counts in his child sexual abuse trial.

What It Was with Jerry Sandusky and his sentencing!

The Penn State child abuse scandal actually broke in 2011, but Sandusky was sentenced this year, in 2012.

Sandusky was the assistant coach for Penn State who was indicted on 52 counts of child molestation.

On June 22, 2012, Sandusky was found guilty on 45 of the 48 charges.

He was sentenced on October 9th to to a minimum of 30 years and a maximum of 60 and Penn state was fined $60 million.

Another piece of this puzzle is "JoePa" Joe Paterno, the legendary head coach of Penn State from 1966 to 2011.  Then-graduate assistant Mike McQueary told the court that he told Paterno in 2002 about Sandusky's abuse of a ten-year-old boy.  According to the report, Paterno notified Athletic Director Tim Curley about the incident, and later notified Gary Schultz, Vice President of Finance and Business, who also oversaw the University Police, but didn't actually do anything about it.

Although he wasn't found guilty of anything, he was criticized for his failure to follow up on the allegations. On January 13, 2012, Paterno was hospitalized in State College for complications relating to his cancer treatment, and he remained there until his death nine days later on January 22, 2012.
