In the past, the American Idol judges have received some criticism over how "nice" they have been, of course taking Simon Cowell out of the equation.
But Nicki Minaj claims she was the complete opposite . . . perhaps too tough on the contestants.
She says, "It's hard for me to not say how I really feel. I'm having a hard time with how honest I am sometimes. Everyone else is so nice. "I was just thinking back about some things, and thinking 'I wonder if that was not nice.' . . . As an artist, I've always grown more from the tougher criticism . . . I'd like to give people that thick skin [to] really give it their all. It IS a competition."
