Actor Dennis Quaid adopts cat named Dennis Quaid

Dennis Quaid, who has appeared in a number of films, including “A Dog’s Purpose,” “The Day After Tomorrow” and “The Parent Trap,” has a new fan named... Dennis Quaid?

The 66-year-old actor adopted a black cat from the Lynchburg Humane Society in Virginia after hearing that the feline was in need of a loving home.

Last week, Virginia-based news station WSLS-TV featured the 6-year-old cat on its broadcast as a part of its “Clear the Shelters” program.

When Quaid got wind of the rescued animal, he reached out to the shelter.

Danielle Ulmer, the manager of the Lynchburg Humane Society adoption center, said the staff thought they were being pranked.

“I was like, ‘There is no way this is real,‘” she told WSLS-TV.

Coincidentally, the actor co-hosts a podcast called “The Pet Show,” a biweekly audio production in which Quaid and producer Jimmy Jellinek discuss “pet care, pet style, pet media and celebrity pet influencers,” according to a show description.

Jellinek said the Human Society staff took a while before they believed Quaid was really inquiring about the cat, and ultimately the two -- cat and namesake -- met via Zoom.

“It was really off the wall, but we couldn’t resist,” Quaid said. “I’m out to save all the Dennis Quaids of the world.”

Quaid and Jellinek share a blind cat named George that they rescued two years ago. They said they’re looking forward to Dennis Quaid joining the “cat pack.”

Jellinek told WSLS-TV he wants people to adopt more rescued animals in shelters.

“Adopt, don’t shop,” he said. “Do not buy pets at pet stores. Adopt them from shelters. There’s so many pets facing euthanasia, and we don’t want that to happen. There’s opportunity for every animal to have a home if people just adopt them.”

“Maybe they should start naming animals in shelters after different celebrities and see who bites,” Quaid added.

Ulmer said the staff at the Lynchburg Humane Society have already decided that’s a good idea.

“We’re like, ’Alright, so everyone pick your top three favorite celebrities,‘” she told WSLS-TV.

Jellinek plans to travel from Los Angeles to Lynchburg to pick up Dennis Quaid the cat this weekend. Jellinek said he’ll fly back to California with the cat in first class.
