DeChambeau, who led the PGA Tour in driving distance last season, made eagle on the 581-yard, par-5 hole at Whistling Straits after crushing a 417-yard tee shot, ESPN reported.

During his fourball match, DeChambeau hit his tee shot directly over fans standing to the right of the tee box, the sports network reported. His partner, Scottie Scheffler, and his European opponents, Tyrrell Hatton and Jon Rahm, decided to hit their drives in a more traditional fashion to the left side of the fairway.

By hitting over the fans, tall fescue grass and water, DeChambeau left himself a mere 72-yard wedge shot to the green, Golf magazine reported.

By comparison, Scheffler, drove his tee shot 305 yards, CNN reported.

Sky Sports’ cameraman, who had not expected DeChambeau to hit the ball from that angle, frantically zoomed in and refocused his shot in time to see the ball land in the center of the fairway, the magazine reported.

“Absolutely roasted!” the Sky Sports broadcast team said during its broadcast.

DeChambeau chipped his second shot to 4 feet and made an eagle putt to tie the match after five holes, ESPN reported.

“I said to myself, ‘All right, I have to aim at the green,’ so I did,” DeChambeau told reporters after the match. “So I just aimed at the green, and bombs away.

“I didn’t want to make par,” DeChambeau added, “because if I did, I would be walking home.”

DeChambeau and Scheffler halved their match against Hatton and Rahm, but the U.S. squad took a 6-2 lead after the first day of the Ryder Cup, the Americans’ best first-round showing since 1975, ESPN reported.
