Detroit freeway shooting: ‘Multiple arrests’ made in death of toddler

DETROIT — Authorities in Michigan announced Saturday that “multiple arrests” were made after a 2-year-old boy was killed and a 9-year-old boy was seriously injured when gunfire erupted on a Detroit interstate.

According to The Detroit News and WJBK, the shooting occurred shortly before 10 p.m. EDT Thursday on Interstate 75. Michigan State Police said a driver was traveling on I-75 southbound when someone inside “a light-colored, four-door passenger car” opened fire at the victims’ vehicle.

On Saturday, the state police’s department of special investigations said more information would be forthcoming, the News reported.

“This is still in the investigation stages, so bear with us as we continue to work this case,” the statement read.

Brian Christian told police he was driving his Ram truck in Detroit when the vehicle pulled up alongside him and someone opened fire, the newspaper reported.

Christian’s sons, Brison Christian, 2, and BJ Christian, 9, were both hit and taken to an area hospital, according to Lt. Mike Shaw, a spokesperson for the state police.

Brison Christian later died, the News reported. BJ Christian was initially listed in serious condition but was later released, the newspaper reported.

Family members told WDIV they were driving home from basketball practice when the shooting occurred.
