Girl, 13, knowingly brought drug-laced snacks to Louisiana school, police say

BAKER, La. — A 13-year-old Louisiana girl knowingly brought snacks laced with drugs to a school on Thursday, causing several students to become ill, authorities said.

According to the Baker Police Department, drugs were cooked into Rice Krispies treats, WBRZ reported. Officers were called to Advantage Charter Academy in Baker on Thursday afternoon, the television station reported.

Four seventh-graders at the school ingested the treats and began acting erratically, according to school officials. The students experienced hallucinations and were hyperventilating, prompting school staff to contact emergency medical personnel and the police, The Advocate reported.

Three students were later transported to an area hospital and were listed in stable condition, the newspaper reported.

Baker police Chief Carl Dunn said his investigators believe the girl knew the food contained drugs and are trying to determine how she obtained them, WBRZ reported.

“We have no higher priority than the health and safety of our students,” Advantage Charter Academy spokesperson Jessica Meldrum said in a statement. “After the incident that occurred on our school’s campus this afternoon requiring a response by emergency personnel, school leaders immediately began an investigation. Student privacy rights prevent me from sharing specific details.”

The student was questioned by officers but was released without charges, Dunn said. The chief said charges could be filed at a later date.

Walter Morales, board president of Louisiana Charter Academies, said the female student sold some of the treats to another student, The Advocate reported. Morales said both students will likely be expelled from the school, the newspaper reported.

“When this happens in seventh grade, it’s unfortunate, and it’s a blow,” Morales told The Advocate. “Even in normal times, these kids have a lot of hurdles piled up in front of them before they even start the race. We have worked hard at maintaining a safe environment where we can foster respect for learning -- and understanding that education is the way to tear these hurdles down.

“An incident like this … is beyond disappointing.”
