Sally’s aftermath: 3 rescued after being swept into storm pipe in Alabama

ANDALUSIA, Ala. — Paddleboarding nearly turned into tragedy for an Alabama man and his two teenage sons Wednesday.

Boating in the aftermath of Hurricane Sally, the three were sucked into a storm pipe in Andalusia, WSFA reported.

The storm dumped heavy rains in the area, creating the swift currents, the television station reported.

The trio was drawn into the storm pipe, but officials were able to pull them out about 65 yards away, according to WSFA.

There were no injuries.

Andalusia Fire Capt. Shannon Kelly said the water was so high that the pipe was not visible to the paddleboarders, She added that there was no air to breathe inside the pipe.

“They said they basically just held their breath and swam really hard," Kelly told the television station. "They are extremely lucky.”
